Feeding Style
Adult flies do not have teeth to chew their food. Instead, they have piercing and sucking or sponging mouthparts which enable them to ingest their food. Flies like other diptera, relies on their salivary secretions to liquefy substrate to be soft enough for ingestion. Species of diptera which relies o blood for food usually have long and this proboscis that can penetrate through the host’s skin thus sucking blood. On larval stage, they will depend entirely on moist and decomposing food items.
Habitat
As stated earlier, diptera is one of the most successful insect order in the world. They can be found in all type of terrestrial habitats. A wide range of species can also be found across freshwater habitats. Wrenn 2012 suggest that the rapid reproduction process of diptera has enable them to establish in any period of time if the environmental condition is favourable.
